Celebrities unite for breast cancer at golf classic

Celebrities gathered at Hershey Country Club to raise funds for breast cancer awareness at the Mid Penn Bank Celebrity Golf Classic.

HERSHEY, Pa. — Celebrities hit the course for a cause at the 10th annual Mid Penn Bank Celebrity Golf Classic at Hershey Country Club on Wednesday.

“I look forward to this event every single year. The minute Mid Penn puts it on the calendar, it goes on my calendar,” said former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski. “We play golf, we have fun, we giggle, we laugh and have a good time, but we all know it’s for a reason, and that’s what makes it so rewarding.”

“We get to hang out with each other and have that camaraderie that we always have and joking each other and stuff, which is fun, but we understand what we’re really here for,” Ricky Watters, former NFL wide receiver and Harrisburg native, added.

The cause that drew out the celebrities was raising money for breast cancer awareness, specifically, the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and the Basser Center for BRCA at Penn Medicine.

The cause was near and dear to many who were in attendance.

“That big C, cancer, that’s a scary thing. I think it’s in everybody’s family somewhere in some way, shape or form, so whatever we can do, we need to fight that thing, and we need to beat it,” said Watters.

“My wife is a breast cancer survivor, so it means so much to me, personally,” said Jaworski. “But, it’s also meaningful to see all my former teammates, friends that I have played against, really sharing the same emotion and reason why we’re here.”

While celebrities and playing partners were in a shootout on the course, their wives came together alongside community volunteers to help pack care packages for Pennsylvanians recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Everything you pack today has its purpose for the person who’s receiving it,” said breast cancer survivor Teresa Spittle, who received one of the care packages when she went through her fight. “I encourage you to think about that person who’s going to open that box. They’re in their darkest time, and what you’re doing right now in this moment is going to be a beacon of light for them, a beacon of hope.”

Everyone worked hard to contribute and do their part to support the fight.

“We are all impacted by breast cancer,” said Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition Communications Director Natalie Kopp. “We could not do the work that we do without Mid Penn Bank, the Celebrity Golf Classic, the golfers, the sponsors [or] the volunteers. Because of the work that’s done this week, we can reach communities all across Pennsylvania through personalized patient advocacy, through breast cancer research [and] through the care packages, and we can reach more families across Pennsylvania who have been impacted.”

The Coalition reached 1,000 care packages at this year’s Project Pink day of service event at the 10th annual Mid Penn Bank Celebrity Golf Classic.
