Alessandro Michele dressed four celebrities in Valentino for the 2025 Governors Awards on Sunday.
Retro, But To What End?
Honestly, I’ve been a bit baffled by Amanda Seyfried’s recent red carpet choices, because they haven’t felt as consistent as we’re used to seeing, and that continues with this Valentino Resort 2026 gown. The dress itself isn’t the issue. Put this on Maude Apatow, Natasha Lyonne or Florence Welch and I’d be purring. The vintage sensibility makes sense for them. But I’m not convinced this aligns with Amanda. Her style used to be easy to define — soft glamour, modern romance — yet now I’m not sure what her signatures are anymore. The fluffy sleeves, the bow, the brown-and-pink palette… I don’t dislike it. I just don’t believe her in it.

Minty Fresh Ambassador
Brand ambassador Dakota Johnson wore a mint moiré Valentino Spring 2026 strapless gown from the Fireflies collection. And she understood the assignment: don’t overwork a dress that already has personality. No gloves, no cape, no styling theatrics. Just the gown and a simple pendant necklace. That’s why she is their ambassador — she knows when to let the fabric do the talking. The soft sheen photographs beautifully, the draped waist is subtle but effective, and the colour brings out the warmth in her complexion. She didn’t reinvent anything here, but she didn’t need to.

Less Expected, More Refined
Tessa Thompson is usually our red-carpet disruptor — the woman who gives us sculptural tailoring, unexpected silhouettes, or something conceptual. Which is why I was delightfully surprised by her Valentino Resort 2026 off-the-shoulder chiffon red gown. Some will say it’s too safe for Tessa, even at an Academy event, but I love that she can do both. The ruby lip, the diamond-and-ruby necklace, the quietly regal posture — it all works. This is proof that restraint can still read as individuality when the wearer fully inhabits it.

Old Hollywood Meets Unfortunate Execution
I absolutely see what Kate Hudson was going for in her Valentino Spring 2026 gown. The liquid satin, soft sage tone, bias-cut drape, and 1930s-inspired beading all gesture towards retro glamour. Her hairstyle and jewels completed the mood beautifully. The problem is the dress itself — the finishing looks cheap. The puckering at the seams, the random ruching at the waist. The idea was there. The execution let her down.
