With its rich history and contributions to literature and music, the UK is a destination that continues to captivate travellers. But while sightseeing, it’s important to keep some travel advice in mind.

Tourists are warned of potential terrorism threats, as there have been previous attacks in the U.K. that have resulted in casualties.

“They have included random violent incidents in public areas, such as knife and vehicle attacks, as well as explosions,” reads the statement.

Theft and petty crime can also occur in tourist areas, restaurants, pubs, and bars, and tourists are advised not to leave bags or purses hanging on the back of their chairs.

In terms of health, a Nov. 21 update, Canada warned tourists of polio, an infectious disease spread from person to person and through contaminated food and water.

From the Eiffel Tower to the Palace of Versailles and the Louvre Museum, France consistently ranks as a top European destination.

The risk level for France remains at yellow due to “the elevated threat of terrorism.”

The advisory site states, “Over the past few years in France, several opportunistic and premeditated attacks have occurred. These have resulted in many deaths and injuries. Further attacks are likely.”

The French government has the Vigipirate plan, which has a three-level public alert system for terrorism, and any changes are communicated online and through the media.

Tourists should also be vigilant due to petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse and mobile phone snatching. Tourists are common targets, and petty crime often occurs on public transportation.

With its culture, ancient architecture, and world-class cuisine, it’s no wonder that Italy remains a popular choice among Canadian travellers. But before you go, make sure to stay up-to-date on the latest travel advice.

Canadians are urged to “exercise a high degree of caution” due to “the threat of terrorism.” Attacks have been carried out in several European cities, which means that Italy cannot be ruled out. Potential targets could include tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels, and other sites frequented by foreigners. Travellers must also be aware of crime, such as petty crime, burglaries, and theft.

Italy is preparing to welcome a large influx of visitors due to the Jubilee, which will take place in Rome from Dec. 24, 2024, to Jan. 6, 2026. Travellers will head to the city for pilgrimages and large-scale events, so expect large crowds, traffic, and increased presence of security forces.

Canada also has advisories in place for popular destinations such as Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica.
