Ethan Hawke recently teased his next movie with Blue Moon director Richard Linklater. Hawke and Linklater have collaborated on nine films to date: Before Sunrise, The Newton Boys, Waking Life, Tape, Before Sunset, Fast Food Nation, Before Midnight, Boyhood, and Blue Moon. However, Hawke believes that their 10th movie will be “the best one” yet.
What Ethan Hawke said about next movie with Richard Linklater
Ethan Hawke made an appearance on the Today show on Wednesday, January 7, to promote his latest movie with director Richard Linklater, Blue Moon. When host Craig Melvin asked about Hawke’s next team-up with the filmmaker, the actor stated, “Everything’s been preparation for what’s to come. The 10th is going to be the best.”
This prompted Melvin to note that this was a bold statement, and Hawke replied, “I’m not even shy. I’m not even nervous about saying it. We’ve been thinking about this movie since 1998. He’s [Linklater’s] been thinking about it longer than that. He’s had this dream for a long time in his head, and it’s gonna be good.”
The Oscar-nominated actor even claimed that the project will be “among the greatest films ever made.” He added, “And I’ll be back on your show in about 18 months to back it up,” before stating it will likely come out in 2027.
Hawke also shared that the movie is a period piece. This comes after Linklater spoke about what appears to be the same project during a November 2025 interview with Filmmaker magazine. “I’m trying to make a bigger historical thing from the 19th century [about] the transcendentalists — Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Thoreau. The 19th-century American radicals. The hippies of the 1830s and 40s, the beginnings of feminism, environmentalism, abolitionism, all that,” he divulged. “They’ve got a s—– president, Andrew Jackson.”
Linklater also expressed hope about casting Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac in the movie. At the time of this article’s composition, it’s unclear whether either Portman or Isaac has joined the project.
