Barry Keoghan Explains How His Last Name Is Pronounced

Barry Keoghan, who was not around for a while over the past year, is back in the limelight, and the highly-regarded actor will soon appear in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man movie, alongside Cillian Murphy and Rebecca Ferguson. He also recently appeared in Crime 101. During a recent press tour for the Peaky Blinders movie, the Irish star opened up about how to pronounce his last name, but it started a debate online.

Barry Keoghan on how to pronounce his last name

Barry Keoghan, one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation, recently spoke to Greg James on BBC Radio One, where he primarily discussed his upcoming film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, in which Keoghan stars as Duke Shelby, the son of former gangster Tommy Shelby.

During the discussion, Barry Keoghan spoke about how to pronounce his last name, something the majority of his fans got wrong. While many called him Barry “Kee-gan,” the actor explained that the real pronunciation of his last name was “Ke-oh-gan.” He clarified this while talking to James.

James said that he had called it “Ke-oh-gan” in the past, and fans had protested, saying that he was wrong. “Until a Keoghan tells you it’s not how you say it…,” the Saltburn star responded to this. He further added about the mispronunciation, “Kee-gan is wrong. It sounds like an infection.”

However, in a rather interesting twist, many fans started a debate about the pronunciation on the Instagram post that contained this section of the interview. “Barry is literally pronouncing his own name wrong sorry he is as an Irish person, he’s pronouncing wrong,” one user wrote in the reel. Another user wrote, “Ya, you can. The g in keoghan isn’t pronounced. He is saying it wrong. Hope this helps.”

Some fans defended the pronunciation, as well. One fan, for instance, claimed that a person could not get the pronunciation of his own name wrong. Another user pointed out the different pronunciations of the same word.

After his appearance in the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, Keoghan will be seen in The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, where he plays Ringo Starr.
