Amazon Fresh Croydon set to close for good

Amazon Fresh Croydon set to close for good

Amazon has announced it will shut all of its UK Amazon Fresh grocery stores, placing up to 250 jobs at risk.

The company plans to close all 19 sites, with five set to be converted into Whole Foods outlets.

One of these stores is the East Croydon store on Ruskin Square.

An exact closing date hasn’t been specified yet.

Amazon said the closures are part of a bigger shake-up of its UK grocery business, with more focus moving online.

The company insisted it is still “deeply invested” in the UK. A consultation has started with staff at the Fresh stores, which employ about 250 people.

John Boumphrey, country manager for Amazon UK, said: “Since 2008, we’ve worked hard to innovate to help our customers save time and money when shopping for groceries and household essentials.

“We continue to invent and invest to bring more choice and convenience to UK customers, enabling them to shop for a wide range of everyday essentials and groceries with low prices and fast delivery through Amazon.co.uk, Amazon Fresh, and Whole Foods Market stores, alongside our third-party grocery partners, including Morrisons, Co-op, Iceland, and Gopuff.”
