Alleged absconder linked to 2018 drug case returned to Hong Kong

A 50-year-old man who allegedly absconded in connection with a 2018 narcotics trafficking case has been transferred back to Hong Kong by mainland Chinese authorities, with the suspect to appear at court on Friday afternoon.

Hong Kong police said on Friday that authorities across the border had used a mutual notification mechanism to tell them on May 20 that the suspect was previously detained there for allegedly “illegally crossing the border” via mainland waters.

The force said the man was handed over to Hong Kong police at the Shenzhen Bay checkpoint on Friday after serving his prison sentence on the mainland.

It was not immediately clear when the suspect left Hong Kong or the duration of his prison sentence on the mainland.

The suspect is believed to be connected with dangerous drug trafficking that took place in Sham Shui Po on July 2, 2018, but had failed to appear at a High Court hearing a year later due to allegedly absconding from Hong Kong.

The man is due to appear at the High Court on Friday afternoon to face charges related to the case.
