Akasa Air has flown over 10,000 pets since launching its ‘Pets on Akasa’ service in November 2022.
In a clear sign that pet-friendly travel is gaining popularity in India, Akasa Air on February 20 announced that it has flown over 10,000 pets since launching its ‘Pets on Akasa’ service in November 2022. The airline said the milestone highlights the growing trust among pet parents and steady demand across its domestic network.
According to the airline, the October–December festive quarter recorded the highest number of pet journeys, accounting for nearly 35% of annual travel. Monthly volumes during this period were about 63% higher than average months, indicating that many families prefer to travel with their pets during holidays.
The Bengaluru–Delhi–Bengaluru route emerged as the most popular sector for pet travel, contributing 13.66 per cent of total pet journeys. The airline also reported strong demand from Tier II and Tier III cities, with Guwahati among the frequently travelled destinations.
Of the 10,000 pets flown so far, around 60 per cent were dogs and 40 per cent were cats. A large majority, about 93%, travelled in the cabin alongside their owners, showing a strong preference among passengers to keep their pets close during flights.
The airline also noted repeat usage, stating that 26% of pet parents have travelled more than once with their pets. In one notable case, a customer flew 26 times on the Mumbai–Goa route with his miniature poodle.
To support growing demand, Akasa Air has introduced several service enhancements. The airline allows up to three pets per flight and has increased the in-cabin weight limit to 10 kg, including the pet carrier. It has also simplified the booking process and introduced a more flexible health certification policy.
Launched on November 1, 2022, the ‘Pets on Akasa’ service enables customers to travel with cats and dogs on domestic flights across 26 cities. Depending on the pet’s weight, they can travel either in the cabin or as cargo.
With rising urban pet ownership and changing travel preferences, pet-inclusive aviation services appear to be steadily becoming a mainstream option in India.
