Siena Senn is a Registered Dietitian who works with Guthrie Cortland Medical Center. She says a healthy diet can be created by following the basics like the food pyramid that includes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy & a protein source (typically meat, but doesn’t have to be).
Siena says the best thing to know about “bad” foods are they are not actually bad. She says the human body’s preferred source of energy is sugar, but the sugar you’d receive from whole grains, fruits, & veggies. She also reminds us, your body needs fat for heart health, eye health, joint health, & brain health.
Adding frozen veggies is an easy way to incorporate food into a healthy diet. This can be accomplished by adding broccoli to scrambled eggs for breakfast, adding broccoli to salad for lunch, or maybe even pasta for dinner. Cottage cheese is also a good protein source.
Siena’s advice is to start small. Not every goal needs to be hit immediately. Accomplishing small goals at a time will ensure you keep trying to reach them & eventually stick with them throughout the year.
