UNL Extension offers tips for eating healthy in the new year

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – With the new year brings a multitude of common resolutions. Many strive to lose weight or become healthier in the new year, food, nutrition and health educator at UNL Extension, Brenda Aufdenkamp, expresses how important it is to pay attention to what you eat.

“Remember when it comes to our health and well-being and eating, we’re supposed to eat for nourishment, not necessarily eat for enjoyment. As Americans, we sometimes get that out of whack and I lead the pack there be thinking about being in the moment so don’t eat in front of the television, don’t eat and drive, make an intentional time where you’re going to stop for 30 minutes and you’re going to sit down and present with the food and really savor those flavors,” Aufdenkamp said.

Environment plays a large role in the way many enjoy their meals.

“It will slow us down so we don’t eat as much. If we thoroughly digest our food, we’re not going to eat as much, if we incorporate water when we’re eating, we’re going to fill up a lot faster. Very much the environment plays a huge big thing in the whole health of our bodies and of our minds,” Aufdenkamp said.

On top of eating healthy, it is important to balance nutrition with physical activity.

“Figure out how many calories you’re going to eat and then balance it with that physical activity. You can even sit in a chair and just move in your legs and our arms in new ways. Make sure that you move every joint and every body part every day in some way,” Aufdenkamp said.
