SELAH, Wash. – Starting in the coming school year, the Selah School District will implement a new policy that will keep most electronic devices out of students’ hands during the school day.
Selah School District officials said their new revised electronic device policy will take effect in the 2026-2027 school year and will apply to students in all grades preschool through 12th grade.
The policy states that telecommunication devices may only be turned on and operated before and after the regular school day. Telecommunications devices include cell phones, headphones, ear buds, smart watches, smart glasses and many other electronic devices. School district officials said phones may be operated during the school day if a school administrator authorizes the student to use the device, or if an emergency situation exists that involves imminent physical danger.
According to the district’s policy, a student’s device may be confiscated if they violate the policy. The device may only be returned to the student’s parent or legal guardian.
Selah School District officials said the new policy is intended to create learning environments where students can focus, participate and learn together.
