VRL to continue in 2026/27 season with expanded Premier League

The representatives of the WPF of Serbia and Montenegro have met in Belgrade. It was the first meeting between the two federations after the elections in the Serbian water polo association.

The Montenegrin federation was represented by President Nikola Milic, Vice President Milos Mracevic, and President of the Water Polo Expert Council Drago Pejakovic. Slobodan Soro, the President of WPF of Serbia, and Sports Director Aleksandar Nikolic were the hosts of the meeting.

The main topic of the meeting was the further development of the Water Polo Regional League (VRL League), a joint project of the two federations. It was agreed that the league’s inaugural season had largely met expectations, delivering significant sporting and media exposure, as well as numerous benefits for all participating clubs.

At the same time, it was noted that the short period between the league’s establishment and the start of its first competitive season left room for further improvements to its organizational structure.

In the coming period, the league’s governing bodies, including the Board of Directors and other working committees, will be established to further strengthen its operations, the WPF of Serbia announced.

The competition format was discussed, with both federations agreeing that the number of clubs competing in the Premier League needs to be increased (eight clubs participated in the 2026 season – Ed.), while maintaining the First League as an integral part of the competition system.

It was concluded that the VRL League will continue in the 2026/27 season, with both federations reaffirming their commitment to building on the successful inaugural season by further enhancing the league’s organization, competition format, and media presence, all with the aim of supporting the continued development of water polo in the region.

Radnicki won the first edition of the VRL League, beating Primorac in the final.
