The FIFA World Cup Round of 32 kicked off on Sunday with South Africa meeting Canada at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
After a defensive struggle with no goals in regulation, Canada’s Stephen Eustáquio broke through in stoppage time with a game-winner in the 92nd minute to secure a 1-0 victory. Canada will be playing in the Round of 16 for the first time in team history.
Eustáquio’s goal overshadowed a brilliant effort from South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who had five saves before the late shot got past him.
The first half was scoreless, but not because of a lack of opportunities. Canada had multiple chances in front of the net but failed to convert against a spirited backline for South Africa.
The Canadians appeared to get another stroke of luck when Richie Laryea went down in the box, but a penalty wasn’t awarded.
The second half started in similar fashion before Canada had a breakaway attempt. However, South Africa’s Mbekezeli Mbokazi made an incredible effort to clear the ball and preserve the tie.
After Canada’s Alphonso Davies entered the match, Promise David had a chance from the top of the box that was just off the mark.
After five minutes of stoppage time was added to the clock, Eustáquio corralled a volley and fired it into the back of the net from the top of the box.
Canada will face the winner of Monday night’s match between Morocco and the Netherlands in the Round of 16 on Saturday.
