While Invincible Season 5 is slated to arrive next year, Robert Kirkman had originally planned to make an Invincible movie long ago. This was before the live-action film’s announcement in 2017 and even before the animated show graced Amazon Prime Video and garnered acclaim. However, it never materialized, getting scrapped before it could progress any further. Kirkman recently revealed the reason, attributing the abandoned plan to an abysmal script.
Robert Kirkman reveals his scrapped Invincible movie was ‘absolutely horrible’
The series and comic book creator participated in a discussion at an entertaining masterclass at Annecy. He discussed his work on The Walking Dead franchise and Invincible. Naturally, the latter series also came up in the conversation. This prompted him to share some information about a planned feature adaptation that never came to fruition, as the script was “absolutely horrible.”
“It was just embarrassing, just bad,” Robert Kirkman shared (via Deadline). “It was a fun lesson because you fight for the opportunity to write your screenplay, and then you personally keep the project from happening because you did that.”
Notably, a live-action Invincible movie was first announced in 2017. The Hollywood Reporter reported that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were joining forces with Kirkman to adapt it for Universal Pictures, with the former two tapped to write, direct, and produce the adaptation.
Since the announcement, development has been progressing at an incredibly slow pace. One key reason is the Invincible animated series and Robert Kirkman’s prioritization of it over the movie. Last year, while speaking with ComicBook and without diving into the details, he said that the show made certain aspects of the film’s development “vastly easier” and others “more difficult.” He added, “That’s kind of where I have to leave it, unfortunately. It’s still early going.”
However, the Marvel Zombies co-creator was optimistic about the Invincible movie eventually seeing the light of day. He admitted, “I would be shocked if it doesn’t happen one day.”
Earlier this year, Kirkman reaffirmed its development status while chatting with ScreenRant. Calling it a “long process,” he expressed hope that it would “come together sooner rather than later.” Kirkman also stressed that the show was of utmost importance. He continued, “There’s certainly movement here and there behind the scenes, but nothing that we can reveal just yet.”
Meanwhile, the first four seasons of Invincible are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Season 5 and 6 are on the way, with the former premiering sometime in 2027.
