Jason Statham’s The Meg to stream on HBO Max next month
Jason Statham’s blockbuster action feature is coming to the streaming platform in the coming month.
The Meg will swim into HBO Max’s content Library on July 1, 2026, according to Warner Bros. Discovery.
The movie’s story revolves around Jason Statham’s Jonas Taylor, who saves the crew of an underwater research facility from a 75-foot prehistoric shark that attacks and terrorizes them. It hit theaters in 2018 and was made on a reported budget of $130 million to $178 million (via Box Office Mojo).
Moreover, The Meg went on to do well at the box office and covered its massive budget easily. It did an opening collection of $45 million and went on to earn around $145 million at the domestic box office.
At the international market, the shark horror movie collected approximately $383 million. This brought The Meg’s total collection to around $529 million. Despite being a hit, the movie received mixed reviews from both critics and the audience.
On Rotten Tomatoes, The Meg received a 47 percent score on the Tomatometer based on 311 critics’ reviews. However, it had a lower score of 44 percent on the Popcornmeter, based on audience reviews. Following the movie’s box-office success, a sequel titled Meg 2: The Trench was announced, dropping in theaters in 2023.
While speaking about whether any more Meg movies will be made, Jason Statham told Entertainment Weekly in 2018, “I think it’s like anything in this day and age. If it makes money, there’s obviously an appetite to make more money. And if it doesn’t do well, they’ll soon sweep it under the carpet. But that’s the way Hollywood works.”
