Anya Taylor-Joy reflects on her experience making Furiosa
In a cover story for The Hollywood Reporter, Taylor-Joy spoke about collaborating with Miller on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. She revealed that she had a different vision for her character and didn’t want her story to be limited to simply confronting Dementus. Instead, she wanted the man who destroyed Furiosa’s life to face a fitting fate. While her vision initially clashed with Miller’s, she said she is glad that her repeated advocacy ultimately helped give Furiosa the ending she deserved.
“It’s a very difficult conversation to have. If I were to be completely honest about my experience, it would hurt nobody but myself,” she said, referring to working with Miller amid earlier news of alleged disagreements. Expressing her relief around her character’s ending, she added, “I just advocated and advocated and advocated for her to live up to her name. That was my mountain on that movie, and I got it, but it was hard, hard won.”
The film’s finale ultimately sees Furiosa severely harm Dementus and bring him to the Citadel. There, she plants the peach pit into his body. Years pass by; a tree grows, bearing fruit. She brings one of them and gives it to the wives.
Moreover, she shared how working in the Mad Max movies was a dream come true for her. “This was my dream. It was my dream to be in these Mad Max movies and as this crazy feminist icon.” Reflecting on the potential effect the movie would have on her, she added, “I knew that I would enter Australia and leave changed. That’s part of what attracted me to it.”
