Summer break brings fun but no break from healthy lifestyle

School’s out for the summer, and kids are ready for a well-earned break. These few months off are a great time to relax and have fun, but they also tend to fly by in the blink of an eye. With a little planning, you can maximize the break and keep kids healthy, happy and ready for the next school year.

One of the best ways to start summer on the right foot is by keeping a consistent daily schedule. Kids don’t need to follow a strict school routine, but maintaining regular wake-up times, meals and bedtimes can help them feel energized and well-rested.

Summer should also include plenty of time to relax. Reading a favorite book, listening to music and spending time outdoors can help kids recharge after a busy school year.

Staying active is another important part of a healthy summer. Whether it’s riding bikes, swimming, playing at the park, walking the dog or joining a sports camp, aim for at least an hour of physical activity every day.

Maintaining social connections matters, too. Encourage kids to spend time with friends, neighbors, cousins or teammates. Playdates, community events and group activities help children build confidence and practice important social skills.

To avoid wasting all that progress made during the school year, try to mix learning into everyday activities. Visit the library, try science experiments, work on puzzles, keep a journal or explore a new hobby. Even 15–20 minutes of reading each day can help prevent the “summer slide.”

Finally, teach kids how to prepare simple healthy snacks and meals. Easy options include fruit and yogurt parfaits, vegetable sticks with hummus, peanut butter and banana sandwiches, smoothies or homemade trail mix. Find easy and affordable recipes at the Spend Smart Eat Smart website.
