“Many travelers assume yachting is beyond their budget,” admits Jill Taylor, a Chicago-based luxury travel advisor. “In reality, they are often pleasantly surprised by how accessible of a vacation option it can be, particularly when shared across a group or family.”

In fact, the day we spoke, Taylor was freshly off the phone with an everyday client for whom she’s finalizing a Croatian yacht vacation. Ahead, Taylor and two other experienced travel advisors dish about what to look for in a yacht experience and location—as well as six of the best places around the globe where you can chart your own path, make new memories, and witness natural beauty in a way that few others do.

Traveler preferences vary, so keep in mind that your ideal might not be the same as your neighbor’s. Since this is the case, it’s important to consider—and be honest about—the vibe you prefer.

“Some of my clients prioritize privacy and exclusivity, preferring secluded areas with very few other yachts nearby. Others enjoy being part of the social scene and want to anchor where the energy, beach clubs, and nightlife are more buzzy,” Taylor explains.

As a general rule, the following features are signs you’re zeroing in on what might be a superior spot to yacht, the pros tell us:

• Pleasant conditions. Calm waters, clear skies, and warm (but not oppressive) conditions are hallmarks of the best places to yacht, says Jonathan Alder, a Winter Park, Florida–based luxury travel advisor and founder of Jonathan’s Travels. If the location also happens to have “exceptionally soft white sand and strikingly clear water,” even better, Alder adds.

• Ease of access. Now that we’ve cleared the air about what to look for—and avoid—in yacht vacation destinations, here are a handful of expert-approved luxury travel locations to keep in mind when you’re ready to hop aboard.

There are many beautiful places to set sail around the boot, and you won’t be disappointed if you do so, says Pirrung, who declares that “Italy remains timeless.”

The waters surrounding Capri, Ischia, and Elba offer a rich interplay of glamour, history, and culinary delights, Taylor tells us. By docking instead of flying, you can avoid the hassle of flight delays, airports, and unpacking and repacking, “making the experience seamless and immersive,” she adds.

Capri in particular earns yacht cap tips from the pros because this island in the Campania region is home to four distinct grottos and expansive views of the Amalfi Coast. Be sure to dock at Jumeirah Capri Palace, which overlooks the Gulf of Naples, so you can dine at Capri’s only two-Michelin-starred restaurant, L’Olivo. Feeling ultra-luxe?
