Netflix lost one of its biggest original series in December 2025. Fans will get to enjoy the return of Stranger Things‘ kids in the upcoming Tales from ’85 series. But beyond that, the Duffer Brothers already have a remedy lined up for the show’s withdrawal symptoms. Their latest creation for the platform takes everything fans loved about Stranger Things and drops it into uncharted territory.
The Boroughs hits Netflix next month
Netflix will premiere The Boroughs on May 21, 2026, bringing a new sci-fi drama to the streaming platform. It brings the monster element of Stranger Things back. But instead of kids, it focuses on a group of old people.

The eight-episode series places a group of retirees at the center of a supernatural mystery. Stranger Things co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer executive produce the show through their company, Upside Down Pictures.
Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews created the series after their work on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. The story unfolds inside a seemingly idyllic retirement community nestled in the New Mexico desert. A recent widower’s arrival sets off a chain of events that exposes a dark secret threatening the residents.
Alfred Molina leads the cast as Sam, the grieving newcomer who rallies his neighbors against a supernatural threat. Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Bill Pullman, Clarke Peters, and Denis O’Hare round out the ensemble. Jena Malone, Carlos Miranda, Seth Numrich, and Alice Kremelberg also star in supporting roles.
The Duffer Brothers praised the show’s unlikely heroes in an official statement about the project. “While the heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things, they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching,” they said.
The teaser trailer introduces The Boroughs’ peaceful setting before hinting at the danger lurking beneath. “If you just open your heart to this place, you’ll find The Boroughs is not a last chapter,” a voice states, adding, “It’s a new beginning.”
Hilary Leavitt and Ben Taylor serve as executive producers, with Taylor directing two episodes.
