{KXLG – Watertown, SD} Olivia Orthaus has long had a passion for iced coffee, a love that eventually turned into a business opportunity.
Orthaus says she first began thinking about owning her own coffee space about five years ago. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she developed a deeper interest in coffee, especially trends like whipped coffee, while also working as a barista at several shops in Watertown, including Gather.
Today, Orthaus is leading Gather Coffee Co. in downtown Watertown, where customers can find a wide variety of drink options beyond just coffee, along with food items like homemade baked goods and soups. She says there are plans to continue expanding the menu, with hopes of adding more lunch options like sandwiches in the future.
Gather also partners with other local and regional businesses. The shop features products like Black Hills Bagels and Bullseye Honey from Lake Norden, and offers its coffee for purchase to use at home, including single-serve pods and a full line of drink syrups.
Customers familiar with Gather may notice some updates to the space. Orthaus and her team have refreshed the shop with new paint and décor, including a mural in the Tea Room painted by Orthaus herself, featuring the shop’s mascot known as “Bean Man.”
Orthaus says she’s always had an interest in interior design, and now has the chance to bring that passion to life. She often searches estate sales, thrift stores, and online marketplaces for unique décor, while also showcasing original artwork, including photography from friends.
The goal, she says, is to create a welcoming and cozy environment — a place where people can meet with friends, get work done, or host events. The shop’s Tea Room is available to rent and can accommodate around 30 people for meetings, showers, and other gatherings.
Orthaus says the opportunity to purchase Gather came at just the right time, turning a long-time idea into a reality. What started as a love for coffee has now become a space she hopes others can enjoy for years to come.
