Misty — who retired last year as a principal dancer from the American Ballet Theatre — responded to Timothée’s comments on a recent panel during an Aveeno and TOGETHXR launch event.

“First, I have to say that it’s very interesting that he invited me to be a part of promoting Marty Supreme with respect to my art form.” Last November, Misty was pictured in a blue Marty Supreme jacket on Instagram, during a heavy promotional blitz for the Oscar-nominated film.

She continued: “But I think that it’s important that we acknowledge that, yes, this is an art form that’s not ‘popular’ and a part of pop culture as movies are, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have enduring relevance in culture.”

“You see it reflected everywhere. I mean he wouldn’t be an actor and have the opportunities he has as a movie star if it weren’t for opera and ballet and their relevance in that medium,” Misty said. “All of these mediums have a space and we shouldn’t be comparing them.”

Misty is also slated to appear at the Oscars in a Sinners performance featuring Miles Canton, Raphael Saadiq, Buddy Guy, and Shaboozey, just to name a few.

“I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey! Keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.’ All respect to the ballet and opera people out there,” Timothée said. “I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I’m taking shots for no reason.”

But his “shots” were heard loudly and clearly, and has resulted in online and industry fury. Timothée hasn’t responded to Misty’s comments, but his remarks and the subsequent fallout are going to make for a very interesting Oscars broadcast.
