HONG KONG – A cross-border travel for three beautiful furry animals saw a sour end on Thursday when officials discovered them bundled inside a rucksack.
Valued at approximately HK$75,000 ($9,585), they were seized by Hong Kong Customs at the Lo Wu Control Point. The owner of the rucksack, a 53-year-old male passenger, was apprehended in the Arrival Hall of the control point for allegedly importing the cats illegally.
The case has been handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.
Customs officials reminded the public that importing animals into Hong Kong without a valid permit constitutes an offense.
Under the Rabies Regulation, individuals found guilty of illegally importing animals, carcasses, or animal products face a potential maximum fine of HK$50,000 ($6,390), and up to one year of imprisonment.
