New Jersey-based wholesale and online coffee seller Lardera Coffee Roasters is bringing roasting fully in-house through a new 80,000-square-foot facility in East Rutherford.
Production is slated to center on a 60-kilogram IMF roaster supported by coffee silos with capacity for 20 tons of green coffee. The company is also automating packaging with an Effytec horizontal form, fill and seal machine for retail and wholesale bags.
Nick Lin, a production manager at Lardera’s older sister company Adagio Teas, is serving as head roaster at the new facility.
“Expanding from tea into coffee felt like a natural evolution for us, allowing the same focus on quality, sourcing and craftsmanship to extend into a new category,” Lardera Coffee Digital Marketing Manager Ashley Van Tatenhove told Daily Coffee News.
Established in 2022, Lardera is a division of Adagio Teas, part of a brand family that also includes Masters Teas, Selefina Spices and Adagio Bees. The coffee company says it follows the parent company’s commitments to sourcing quality and transparency. Lardera’s roasted coffee sales pages include photos and interviews with coffee producers.
The company also sells green coffee and brewing gear through its online store, including green coffee packages from 8 ounces up to 152-pound wholesale orders.
Sourcing is led by Lardera Coffee Founder and Adagio Tea CEO Michael Cramer along with Lardera Warehouse Manager Jessica O’Toole.
“We work directly with the coffee plantations we source from, without intermediaries, allowing for greater transparency, quality control and long-term relationships,” Van Tatenhove said.
To date, Lardera has relied on outside production roasting while developing profiles and scaling volume, but the company expects to complete the transition into its own facility in the coming weeks. Future plans include the introduction of premium concentrates and other formats.
“We’ve waited a really long time to legitimize the ‘roaster’ in our name and have big plans to catch up on lost time,” Michael Cramer said in an announcement of the expansion. “Adagio is well-established in the world of tea. We think Lardera could resonate in coffee with similar aplomb.”
