Netflix is putting a fresh spin on a legendary Old West figure with an upcoming adult animated series that blends steampunk aesthetics with supernatural horror. The streaming giant has announced the release date of Bass X Machina, featuring a Marvel and DC star in the lead role.
Bass X Machina receives Netflix release date, plot details & more
The Bass X Machina release date is set for October 6, when the adult animated series will drop on Netflix, the streaming giant announced on X (formerly Twitter). Brian Tyree Henry, who voices Bass, leads an impressive cast that includes Janelle Monáe as Glory, Tati Gabrielle as Dana, Cree Summer as Ahni, Chaske Spencer as Lighthorse, Currie Graham as Rivenbark, and Starletta DuPois as Etta.
The show aims to transport viewers to an alternate version of the American West where steam-powered technology runs rampant. In this dangerous landscape, a father takes on the role of lawman to protect his family from threats that blend the criminal, the mechanical, and the otherworldly. Each act of justice he delivers, however, risks pushing away the very people he’s trying to keep safe.
Furthermore, Bass X Machina draws inspiration from Bass Reeves, a real historical figure who served as one of the first Black U.S. Deputy Marshals west of the Mississippi River. While a recent Paramount+ series showed Reeves in a straightforward historical context, Netflix’s version takes significant creative liberties by placing him in a steampunk-inspired alternate reality.
South Korea’s Studio Mir handles animation production for the series. The studio has previously worked on numerous animated projects, including The Legend of Korra and Netflix’s own Witcher anime spinoff.
Henry is both star and executive producer, bringing his considerable voice acting experience to the project. Marvel fans know him as Jefferson Davis from the Spider-Verse films. He voiced Miles Morales’ father in both Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Additionally, he will be seen in the upcoming installment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. He also played Carl (Arkham Clerk) in the 2019 DC film Joker.
