Chelsea Were Immediately Rejected After Shock January Move for Premier League Star

Chelsea reportedly enquired about signing a Premier League rival’s 2024/25 Player of the Season before the Blues’ approaches were rejected in January.

On Friday (February 13), Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea side put in a professional performance, beating Championship side Hull City in the FA Cup fourth round, with Pedro Neto’s hat-trick and Estevao’s second-half strike seeing the Londoners to a comfortable 4–0 win at the MKM Stadium.

Rosenior handed 18-year-olds Jesse Derry and Shim Mhueka cameo appearances on what was a positive night for the Premier League side.

The English head coach is just 39 days into his reign as Chelsea boss and will likely still be implementing his style and philosophy within the squad, while also keeping a close eye on each player’s performance in training.

Despite arriving at the club during the winter transfer window, Rosenior welcomed just one signing – 17-year-old left-back Yisa Alao – and will, no doubt, already have an idea of who he wants to recruit this summer.

However, on Saturday (February 14), The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported that one of the potential summer arrivals could come from Spurs.

The journalist claims that Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall was of interest to both Chelsea and Aston Villa in the winter transfer window, which forced the north London side to rebuff enquiries.

The Sweden international won Player of the Year and helped Spurs win the Europa League under Ange Postecoglou in 2024/25, but was moved into wide positions under Thomas Frank this season.

Both Chelsea and Villa reportedly made “direct contact” with Spurs to see whether a potential opportunity for a transfer existed, but this was rejected by Tottenham, who want the player to remain at the club.

Bergvall, who arrived at Spurs from Djurgarden in 2024, is currently contracted to the club until the summer of 2031, with his role under the new interim head coach, Igor Tudor, unclear.

The 20-year-old has made 26 appearances in all competitions this season, with just seven of his 17 Premier League outings coming from the start.

Spurs return to action on February 22, with Tudor set to take charge of the side against arch-rivals Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in his first game as boss.
