A new update on the status of the Amazon Prime Video series Mr. & Mrs. Smith‘s Season 2 has come to light, with the show finding a new showrunner for the series.
What is the latest Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 update?
According to a new report from Deadline, playwright and screenwriter Anna Ouyang Moench (Beef, Severance) has been tapped to act as showrunner, writer, and executive producer for the upcoming second season of the show. She’ll be succeeding Francesca Sloane, who was showrunner for the first season. Sloane signed an overall deal with HBO last year, but remains an executive producer of the series alongside Donald Glover, who co-created the show.
Deadline’s report notes that Glover still remains involved creatively, and that it’s unlikely any “wholesale changes” are made to the show. The report also notes that the show’s second season is now ready to set a production date in the coming months.
“Anna is a phenomenal storyteller with an incredible ability to balance character-driven drama, sharp humor, and emotional depth,” said Peter Friedlander, global head of television at Amazon MGM Studios. “Her work on Beef and Severance speaks for itself, and we’re thrilled to have her at the helm of Mr. & Mrs. Smith season two as she builds on the series’ compelling world and pushes it into exciting new territory for our global Prime Video customers.”
Mark Eydelshteyn (Anora) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) were previously reported to be set to star in Season 2 of the show. According to Deadline, that remains the case. A ton of rumors on potential guest stars have also popped up, including reports that actors like Lily-Rose Depp, Francesca Scorsese, Levon Hawke, Wagner Moura, Gael Garcia Bernal, and more were all considered for roles.
Season 1 of the series, which premiered in February 2024, starred Donald Glover (who also co-created the show) and Maya Erskine in the titular roles. The season ended in a major cliffhanger, with John and Jane Smith getting into a massive fight with other agents in their home and their fate left ambiguous.
