Real Madrid vs. Athletic Club: The matchup
Real Madrid looks to keep pace with Barcelona, a 3-1 winner over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, at the top of the LaLiga standings. The club enters Wednesday’s matchup with eighth-place Athletic Club with a 10-3-1 overall record and 33 points, trailing rival Barcelona by four points in one fewer match. Madrid is on an odd cold streak in LaLiga play since defeating Barca (2-1) and flipping the calendar to November with an 0-3-0 record over its past three league contests. A penalty kick from Mbappe in the 67th minute was required in order to salvage a 1-1 draw with 17th-place Girona, which fell in line with draws against Elche (2-2) and Rayo Vallecano (0-0).
Athletic Club is playing .500-level football with a 6-2-6 mark through 14 LaLiga matches to go with a 1-1-3 record in five Champions League contests this season. Tough matches are coming to kick off December, too, with Real Madrid on Wednesday, Atletico Madrid on Saturday and a date with Champions League leader Paris Saint-Germain next Wednesday. Offensive challenges remain for the league’s eighth-lowest scoring team, but a 2-0 win over Levante last time was at least a step in the right direction.
