Tesco Christmas Tree buyer Hugh Kenney-Herbert says: “We started stocking these non-drop Christmas trees a few years ago and they became so popular and sold out so quickly that we keep having to increase our order.

“In fact, the launch of the sale triggers an event we now call Christmas Tree Saturday – it’s the day when increasing numbers of shoppers now go out to buy their trees.

“Customers have told us that they love getting into the spirit of Christmas as early as possible and having a tree up in their living room helps create that seasonal magic.

“By the end of November last year nearly all our stock had gone – this year we’ve brought in nearly 50 per cent more as we know how popular they are.”
