Cumbria secured fourth place in a list of top seasonal destinations, according to a survey of more than 12,000 people by holidaycottages.co.uk.
The poll revealed the most-loved UK spots for autumn stays, highlighting the joy of vibrant landscapes, fresh walks, and cosy fireside evenings.
Joby Mussell, chief commercial officer at holidaycottages.co.uk, said: “Now is a great time for holidaymakers to explore the happiest and most affordable destinations the UK has to offer out of season.
“With added flexibility and choice, autumn escapes are more appealing than ever at a cheaper price per person per night, whether for a short break or a week away.”
Cumbria’s fells and forests turn golden in autumn, with shades of gold, red, and orange painting the landscape.
Visitors can enjoy market towns, scenic trails around Derwentwater and Windermere, and family-friendly walks through crunchy leaves.
Topping the list were the Northwest Highlands, praised for their dramatic coastlines, tranquil lochs, and designated Dark Skies areas like Leitir Easaidh near Loch Assynt—ideal for stargazing and, with luck, glimpsing the Northern Lights.
Gloucestershire came second, offering woodland walks, pumpkin picking, and cosy pubs in its honey-stoned villages.
The Forest of Dean was highlighted for family activities such as Gruffalo trails and wildlife spotting.
Dumfries and Galloway was recommended for those seeking peace and quiet.
The Caerlaverock Wetland Centre offers a chance to see thousands of migrating barnacle geese.
Northumberland rounded out the top five, with its dramatic coastline, historic castles, and the iconic Hadrian’s Wall.
Other destinations in the top ten included North Yorkshire, Suffolk, Argyll and Bute, the Isle of Anglesey, and Gwynedd in Wales.
Mr Mussell said it is also an important time for holiday homeowners to attract bookings.
He said: “Features like dog-friendly accommodation can boost bookings by up to 20%, while open fires and hot tubs add a touch of luxury that guests love during the cooler months.”
Holidaycottages.co.uk reported a rise in October half-term bookings compared to last year, marking autumn as an increasingly popular season for UK travellers.
