Two rare bank notes have sold for more than 30 times their shop value because of their links to guns.
The £5 and £20 notes sold for an eye-watering £771.68 after a collector snapped them up on eBay.
The listing explains the polymer notes are highly sought after for their serial number, which feature the infamous AK prefix.
This is thought to be because it resembles the ‘AK’ series of Kalashnikov series of assault rifles that were used by the Soviet Army in the 1940s – the most well-known being the AK-47.
They were later further popularised by their inclusion in the video game series Call of Duty.
The £5 note features the serial number AK37 000001, while the £20 note has the serial number AK21 111111.
Bank of England notes with the serial number AK47 have proven to be popular in previous years thanks to their gun connotations.
The polymer notes are thought to have been made even more valuable thanks to their low serial numbers.
One keen collector placed the hefty £771.68 buy-it-now price to snap up the two notes, along with a £3.24 postage fee.
This means the notes sold for a combined total of 30 times their shop value and will be sure to have Brits checking their wallets.
Both notes were circulated during the reign of Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and remain legal tender.
The Bank of England began issuing banknotes featuring the King’s portrait on June 5 2024, with no other changes to existing designs.
