Madurai: The prevalence of stroke is increasing among young populations, suitable lifestyle modifications and keeping hypertension and diabetes in control can prevent occurrence, said doctors on World Stroke Day on Tuesday.
At Govt Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, an awareness programme for the public on stroke, its prevention and treatment was conducted, presided over by dean L Arul Sundaresh Kumar. P K Murugan, head of the dept of neurology, said that diabetes, hypertension, and obesity are risk factors for stroke. “Prevention always comes first, but even then, in case a person suffers a stroke, if he or she is brought to any govt hospital within four and a half hours, they can be treated with an injunction,” he said. Pamphlets on stroke awareness were also distributed to patients at the hospital.
Doctors of Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital emphasised that stroke in people in thirties and forties is on the rise mainly due to risk factors like stress, sleep deprivation, sedentary lifestyle, and consuming food high in saturated fats. They added that through suitable lifestyle modifications, about 80% of stroke cases can be prevented.
Narendiran, consultant in the dept of neurology in the hospital, said that the main symptoms of stroke are loss of balance, eye changes, face drooping, arm weakness, and speech difficulty. Mukuntharajan, senior consultant and head of the dept of interventional radiology, pointed out that advances in interventional neuroradiology focused on minimally invasive procedures have come as a boon for stroke patients. “Instead of traditional surgery, which involves making large incisions, interventional neuroradiology uses small punctures and advanced imaging to guide the treatment tools. This minimally invasive approach reduces trauma to the body, leading to quicker recoveries and fewer risks,” he added.
