London's top treats revealed in time for Halloween

They analysed average searches for some of the nation’s favourite sweets to see which had the highest averages across the past 12 months.

In London, they found that Dairy Milk was the most popular choice.

Elsewhere, Dairy Milk was the favourite for almost every region, with only the North East and South West of England breaking the trend, as both saw Haribo take the top spot. At the other end of the scale, Snickers was the least searched-for treat, except in London and Northern Ireland, where it was preferred over Twix overall.

For individual areas in the London area, only three areas chose Haribo over Dairy Milk as their favourite. Merton was the only area to break away from this pattern, with a three way tie between Dairy Milk, Haribo and Galaxy.

Toni Dawson of Geraldo’s discussed the results:

“While we’re used to dealing with handmade chocolates, we understand that stocking up for trick or treating requires a different type of treat”

“Seeing Dairy Milk top the tables shows the enduring love people in the UK have for Cadbury’s chocolate. It’s the longest running of any of the treats we looked at, introduced in 1905, and it’s evidently still as popular today.”

“Other than the North East and South West breaking step and pushing Haribo into first place for their regions, the UK is actually very consistent across the board, and you can’t really go wrong handing out Dairy Milk, Haribo or Galaxy to trick or treaters this year.”

“If you’re tempted to say trick, however, then Snickers and Twix might be the option for you.”

“Snickers was the bottom choice for almost every region of the UK, with only London and Northern Ireland searching for Twix less overall, making either of these choices less likely to bring a smile to little monsters’ faces this October.”

“What’s interesting is that with Dairy Milk and Galaxy being consistently first and third, it suggests that solid chocolate is a more popular choice, rather than chocolate around coconut, biscuit or any type of filling.”

“Haribo has an obvious fun appeal with a lot of shapes and flavours, so it’s not surprising to see it ranking highly, but I also wonder how much the increasing issues like peanut allergies might affect the popularity of long-standing treats like Snickers”

“The most important thing is that trick or treating should be fun for anyone taking part, and although the UK has a clear preference for what is obviously a national classic, whatever you stock your cauldron with this year, any of the witches or warlocks knocking at the door will no doubt have a happy Halloween.”
