Here’s our mid-season verdict on all 11 Italians currently playing in the Premier League.
1. Sandro Tonali (Newcastle United) – 8/10
It’s not been the ideal start for Newcastle so far with just two Premier League wins from seven, but Tonali has been one of their top performers so far. Of all players to have played at least 600 minutes this campaign, only Elliot Anderson, Bruno Fernandes, Tijjani Reijnders and Dominik Szoboszlai have made more successful passes in the final third than Tonali’s 102.
There hasn’t been a lot of help around him, but it’s only a matter of time until Tonali starts getting rewarded for his efforts.
2. Destiny Udogie (Tottenham Hotspur) – 6/10
A knee injury left Destiny Udogie on the sidelines to start the season, but he’s earned his place back in the starting line-up for three consecutive matches and has the left-back spot nailed down under Thomas Frank. He’s yet to make a real impact so far, but the international break could be a chance for Udogie to get back up to full speed.

3. Gianluigi Donnarumma (Manchester City) – 8/10
Donnarumma has settled well into Pep Guardiola’s system, and has conceded just two goals in four games. He still has room to adapt to the pace of the Premier League but is shaping up to be a big success story. City’s strong defensive unit does mean that Donnarumma isn’t called upon too much, but he showcased his shot-stopping abilities in the 1-0 win over Brentford.
4. Riccardo Calafiori (Arsenal) – 8/10
Calafiori has established himself as Arteta’s first-choice left-back this season and he’s impressed with his blend of attacking intent and defensive awareness. Only Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres have taken more shots than Calafiori in the Arsenal squad this season, but he’s also been tough to beat in a Gunners defence that have kept four clean sheets.
5. Guglielmo Vicario (Tottenham Hotspur) – 9/10
No goalkeeper in the Premier League has prevented more goals, according to the analyst, than Guglielmo Vicaro’s 2.9. Only David Raya has a higher save percentage, but Vicaro has made an impressive 24 total saves compared to the Spaniard’s 15. He’s been a huge reason why Tottenham sit third in the table with just five goals conceded.
6. Wilfried Gnonto (Leeds United) – 5/10
Gnonto has been unable to find the type of form he showed last season to help Leeds gain promotion back to the Premier League. A calf injury has limited his appearances, but he’s expected back after the international break and will be looking to make his mark on the campaign.
7. Giovanni Leoni (Liverpool) – N/A
There was despair for the teenager after he tore his ACL during his debut for Liverpool in the Carabao Cup against Southampton. Leoni will now be out for the season and will almost certainly miss the World Cup next summer.
8. Michael Kayode v (Brentford) – 6/10
Playing in a struggling Brentford side, Kayode has been one of their standout defenders with more tackles and ground duels won than any of his teammates. The 21-year-old is yet to show any real attacking threat despite playing as a wing-back, which is something Keith Andrews might want to see more of after the international break.

9. Federico Chiesa (Liverpool) – 8/10
One of the surprises packages this season considering how sporadic his minutes were last season. Chiesa has popped up with some important goals for Liverpool this season and has quickly established himself as a fan favourite. He’s banging on the door for a starting spot in the Premier League.
10. Nicolo Savona (Nottingham Forest) – 6/10
Despite being a regular for Juventus last season, Savona has struggled to break into Forest’s squad as he continues to adapt to the Premier League. He might be more favoured by Ange Postecoglou though, who started him on the right of a back five against Newcastle before the international break. Expect more minutes for the 22-year-old heading into the festive season.
11. Diego Coppola (Brighton) – 6/10
It was just a few months ago that Diego Coppola earned his senior Italy debut after impressing for Hellas Verona, but he’s struggled to break into the Brighton squad since his move in the transfer window. He’s been limited to two substitute appearances in the Premier League, but looked solid in two cup starts against Oxford United and Barnsley.
