Storm Amy: Met Office weather warning extended into Powys

The UK’s national forecaster had warned on Wednesday that Storm Amy was expected to bring strong winds into North Wales.

And that warning has now been extended to include large parts of Powys, as part of a change to the warning that has also seen it upgraded to an amber one in Scotland.

Yellow warnings of wind will be in force across Scotland and much of northern England and Wales from 3pm on Friday until midnight on Saturday while Northern Ireland will be covered by a wind warning between 2pm on Friday and midday on Saturday.

The Met Office warning reads: “Storm Amy is expected to bring a spell of strong winds to many parts of northern and western Britain later on Friday and overnight into Saturday.

“South to southwesterly winds will increase during Friday, initially in the west before extending eastwards during Friday night. Gusts of 50-60 mph are likely in many areas, and may reach 60-70 mph in more exposed parts.

“The strongest winds are most likely across portions of northern and western Scotland, where gusts in excess of 90 mph are possible – this is covered by a separate Amber warning for the Friday night period.

“The very strong winds will also be accompanied by spells of heavy rain, with difficult driving conditions likely, especially for high sided vehicles on prone routes, such as crosswinds on exposed or high level routes.

“Winds will ease for most parts through Saturday afternoon, but will continue to be very strong for the Northern Isles and parts of the far north of Scotland through to the end of Saturday, before slowly easing overnight.”

Parts of Powys covered by the warning include Machynlleth, Llanidloes and Rhayader, although the rest of the county should also brace for windy weather.

Why is it called Storm Amy?

Storm Amy was named in line with the Met Office’s storm naming protocol, which helps improve public awareness and readiness for impactful weather.

The Met Office shares that Storm Amy’s development has been influenced by the remnants of Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda over the tropical Atlantic.
