Cumberland Council has highlighted this during Recycle Week.
They stated that billions of items like foil trays, yoghurt pots, aerosols, and shampoo bottles are still being thrown in the general waste each year.
The council said: “Recycle the right things, more often.
“Keep valuable materials out of waste.
“Protect our environment for the future.”
They also advised people to remember that “you may be able to recycle items that we don’t collect from your home at supermarkets and other specialist drop-off points, such as the Boots recycling scheme.”
