SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Spring Hill family is now homeless after a mother, Charnequa Mclemore, said she fell victim to a housing scam.

She told News 2 she learned this week that her family’s dream home turned out to be a fake listing.

“I really can’t believe that this happened to myself and my family,” Mclemore told News 2.

Mclemore said that when she first toured the home on Countess Lane, she scanned a QR code to enter, and communicated with someone by phone who was a man posing as a legitimate leasing agent.

“After we finished touring, we let him know we liked the house. He asked, ‘Did we want to go forward with the application process?’” Mclemore said.

Mclemore says she did apply and paid $775 for a rental application and security deposit. She said someone let her in with a QR code to move in, but a lock was still on the door.

“Everybody was confused, so I kept sending messages: ‘When are you guys gonna come remove the lock?’” Mclemore said.

After living there for just three days, Mclemore says another party came by to tour the house and thought Mclemore and her family were squatters. Mclemore then contacted the Spring Hill Police Department and filed a report Monday.

“It literally put us back at square one from where we were at first,” Mclemore said. “We thought we had somewhere stable, and then in the midst of all this, this pops up, and they’re saying they can’t do anything about it.”

Mclemore and her boyfriend have a 3-year-old and 6-year-old at home. Mclemore is also six months pregnant. She said she’s staying with a friend right now and hopes to find a permanent place to live soon. If you’d like to help, Mclemore’s family set up a GoFundMe. You can donate here.
