Hong Kong Airport hit by flight cancellations as typhoon disrupts travel

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) expects to handle around 800 flights today as a flight rescheduling system is introduced in response to Tropical Cyclone Tapah.

About 100 flights are forecast to be cancelled, while crosswinds have already forced 20 aircraft to divert by mid-morning.

The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) said it was working closely with airlines, government agencies and the wider airport community to maintain services. Its Airport Emergency Centre remains active.

Passengers have been urged to confirm flight details with their airlines before travelling to the airport. Updates are also available through HKIA’s website and mobile app.

Despite severe weather overnight, airport operations were largely stable. Between midnight and 4:30am, 40 flights landed safely.

Extra immigration staff were deployed, while the MTR Corporation extended Airport Express services until 1:30am and added two additional trains.

A taxi queue ticket system was used to manage late-night demand, with all passengers able to leave the airport by 4am.

Temporary rest areas were set up inside the terminal, offering seating, charging stations and basic supplies, while some restaurants and convenience stores remained open through the night.

More than 1,000 staff stayed on site to support passengers, with the authority opening staff rest centres and providing shuttle buses to maintain operations.
