Hong Kong rail passengers have expressed frustration over repeated malfunctions on the Tseung Kwan O line, following a signalling equipment breakdown that created service delays during the Friday morning rush hour and caused long queues on platforms.
The MTR Corporation earlier advised passengers to use the Tsuen Wan or East Rail lines if they needed to cross the harbour from either direction. Services gradually resumed at around 10.30am.
The rail operator first confirmed the service disruptions at 7.49am.
It initially announced a five-to-eight-minute delay to passengers’ journeys. Later, it adjusted train frequencies to one every six minutes between North Point and Po Lam, and one every eight minutes for the route between Tiu Keng Leng and Lohas Park.
The MTR Corp attributed the delay to “some signalling equipment not functioning smoothly at North Point station”.
The platform for Yau Tong station was packed with hundreds of passengers by 9.15am. Over the course of 15 minutes, five trains, including two that arrived empty, stopped at the station, but they were unable to accommodate all waiting commuters.
