Hong Kong’s weather forecaster has issued an amber rainstorm signal, and warned of widespread showers and flooding risks as Tropical Cyclone Wipha approaches.

The Hong Kong Observatory raised the signal at 11.15am on Friday and said showers would be particularly heavy in Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan, both western parts of the New Territories.

More than 100 millimetres and 70 millimetres of hourly rainfall had hit or were expected to hit Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan, respectively, it added.

“Members of the public should stay on high alert and take necessary precautions to reduce their exposure to risk posed by the heavy rain and flooding,” it said.

It also called on people to avoid watercourses and drivers to beware of “serious” road flooding and traffic congestion.
