A few hours from the Nile Valley lies a desert so strange that even seasoned travellers are stunned. The White Desert is a vast expanse of chalk formations carved by wind and sand into bizarre shapes, some resembling towering mushrooms, camels, people, all frozen mid-stride. During the day, the bright white landscape contrasts dramatically with the deep blue sky, and come nighttime, under a full moon, the chalk glows softly. Camping here feels like sleeping on another planet.
