Looking for some fun events this weekend?
If you need a good laugh, head to the cinema to catch the new reboot of The Naked Gun. Art lovers should check out an exhibition on Tibetan artists, while foodies can take part in a cooking class at a culinary space in Central.
This weekend also kicks off a month-long summer festival on the south side of Hong Kong Island – find out more below.
1. Contemporary art from Tibet
Buddhist sculptures and paintings might be what first come to mind when thinking about Tibetan art.
But a lot of contemporary Tibetan art offers perspectives about the region as well as the socioeconomic issues concerning people’s lives.
You can discover that at Rossi & Rossi in Wong Chuk Hang.
Tibetan artist Gade’s Cordyceps Sinensis (2023), for example, is a painting of a cordyceps fungus, often used in traditional Chinese medicine. The fact that it has a bloodied fish hook at the end prompts questions about the trade and its impact.
