3 Hong Kong pupils probed for drinking, overnight stay in separate room on tour

Hong Kong education authorities have expressed concern over reports that two boys and a girl from a secondary school allegedly sneaked out of their hotel to drink alcohol and rent another room overnight during a mainland China exchange tour.

The Education Bureau said on Wednesday that it had contacted the school immediately after learning of the incident.

It added that the school was handling the matter through its internal disciplinary and counselling mechanisms and would submit a report to the government.

“The bureau has reminded schools to instruct students to strictly observe discipline during learning activities, follow relevant rules and guidelines, including not leaving the group or hotel without permission, and comply with the law,” a spokesman said.

It pledged to maintain close contact with the school to provide necessary support and guidance as the investigation proceeded.

The incident reportedly occurred in mid-January during a cultural exchange programme on the mainland organised by the Hong Kong Sze Yap Commercial and Industrial Association Wong Tai Shan Memorial College in Sham Shui Po for its Form Five students.
