Two new G.I. Joe movies are in early development at Paramount Pictures.
So far, there have only been three movies that are part of the live-action G.I. Joe franchise, including 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and 2021’s Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. The ending of 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts teased that a Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover may be coming at some point; however, that project has yet to come to fruition.
What do we know about the G.I. Joe movies?
Per The Hollywood Reporter, it has now been revealed that both Danny McBride and Max Landis are working on scripts for G.I. Joe movies. The article states, “According to several sources, the studio will then try to blend the two scripts into one, but a studio source says that these are [two] separate projects.
“…Developing two scripts at the same time is somewhat rare, but not unheard of. It occurred with the rise of studios’ focus on franchises and big IP plays in the 2010s. Warner Bros.’s Tarzan and Universal’s The Mummy reboot in the mid-2010s had writers working on two versions before their elements merged or one script raced ahead. While not employing this method exactly, Paramount previously put its Transformers and Star Trek movie franchises on multiple tracks, with several scripts developed, including a GI Joe/Transformers crossover movie.”
Landis, who is the son of John Landis, hasn’t worked on a Hollywood project in quite some time, as he was accused of sexual assault and abuse by multiple women. Before that, he wrote the scripts for titles such as 2012’s Chronicle, 2015’s American Ultra, 2015’s Victor Frankenstein, and 2017’s Bright.
McBride, meanwhile, is known for his work on TV shows such as Eastbound & Down, Vince Principals, and The Righteous Gemstones. In recent years, he worked on the scripts for the new trilogy of Halloween movies, while he also has a story credit on 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer.
