YORK, Maine — The York School Department was recently honored with the Healthy Meals Incentives Recognition Award for significantly improving the nutritional quality of their school meals.
The award, presented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service in collaboration with Action for Healthy Kids, recognizes York’s efforts in reducing sodium levels by using local ingredients for flavor, sauces, and more.
The York School Department has partnered with numerous local farms to provide students with fresh Maine beef, chicken, fish, fruits, and vegetables.
Cindy Long, administrator of USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service, praised York’s achievements.
“One of America’s best opportunities to improve child health is by supporting schools in providing tasty and nutritious meals,” said Long. “This Recognition Award highlights the remarkable achievements York has made in offering nutritious meals that students enjoy, and we look forward to them sharing their best practices to help other schools follow in their footsteps.”
Rob Bisceglie, executive officer and president for Action for Healthy Kids, also congratulated York Public Schools.
“The Healthy Meals Incentives Recognition Awards are an opportunity to showcase innovative school nutrition practices that provide children with access to nutritious school meals,” said Bisceglie.
The Lunch Trailblazer Award winners were recognized for improving the nutrition quality of school lunches by meeting weekly sodium guidelines and engaging students in the process.
Bisceglie said the York School Department’s commitment to providing healthy and delicious meals sets a benchmark for other schools, ensuring that students receive the best possible nutrition to support their growth and learning.
