FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WSMV) – The school board in Williamson County voted on Monday night to prohibit students from using cellphones on its elementary and middle school campuses.
After amending the language of the policy, the board voted 10-2 to approve the new policy, which requires elementary and middle school students to lock away their phones during the school day.
High school students will still be able to use their phones during lunch, but not during breaks.
The only remaining issue with the new policy is how and where the devices will be stored during the school day.
The vote came after weeks of discussion regarding the amount of distraction cellphones provide during learning hours, versus how useful a tool they can be, especially during emergencies.
The new policy will begin on August 1.
