WHITTIER, Calif. (KABC) — A Whittier man has been arrested for allegedly using dating apps and websites to trick victims out of more than $2 million.
Christopher Lloyd, 39, used platforms such as Tinder, Hinge and Bumble to con victims of his romance scams, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Thursday.
He is now facing 13 counts of wire fraud and one count of engaging in a monetary transaction in property derived from the fraud, according to federal prosecutors.
According to the federal indictment, Lloyd used the apps and websites to engage in romantic relationships with his victims from April 2021 to February 2024. He then lied to them “to give them the impression that he was financially successful and knowledgeable about investments.”
The indictment alleges he fraudulently induced his victims to provide money and property to him, including in the form of purported investments. Lloyd is accused of telling them he would invest their money and that they would receive returns on the alleged investments.
Federal prosecutors say he caused his victims to suffer more than $2 million in losses.
If convicted, Lloyd faces up to 30 years in prison.
