A large bruise visible on former President Donald Trump’s right hand during his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House on Monday has sparked speculation regarding his health. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that the visible bruising was the result of Trump’s frequent engagements with the American public. “President Trump is a man of the people,” Leavitt said, adding that he shakes hands “all day, every day.” The White House’s explanation followed the circulation of photos online, with many commenting on the mark, which some on social media suggested could be linked to blood-thinning medication or simply the effects of aging.
This is not the first time bruising has appeared on Trump’s hand. In 2024, bruises were noticed on his right hand during various public appearances, as per reports by NBC. At the time, Trump explained that the marks were due to shaking hands with thousands of people. He reiterated this in a 2024 interview, telling Time magazine that frequent handshakes were the primary cause.
During his visit to the White House, Trump and Macron were seen exchanging physical gestures, which have long characterised their public relationship. The two men have a history of extended handshakes. While this is often viewed as a symbol of their diplomatic rapport, their interactions are also a mixture of camaraderie and control.
