White House explains bruise on Trump's hand: 'Man of the people'

A bruise can be seen on President Donald Trump’s right hand during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House.

A large bruise visible on former President Donald Trump’s right hand during his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House on Monday has sparked speculation regarding his health. The mark, which was noticed during their press conference, has been attributed by the White House to Trump’s constant handshakes with members of the public.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that the visible bruising was the result of Trump’s frequent engagements with the American public. “President Trump is a man of the people,” Leavitt said, adding that he shakes hands “all day, every day.” The White House’s explanation followed the circulation of photos online, with many commenting on the mark, which some on social media suggested could be linked to blood-thinning medication or simply the effects of aging.

This is not the first time bruising has appeared on Trump’s hand. In 2024, bruises were noticed on his right hand during various public appearances, as per reports by NBC. At the time, Trump explained that the marks were due to shaking hands with thousands of people. He reiterated this in a 2024 interview, telling Time magazine that frequent handshakes were the primary cause.

During his visit to the White House, Trump and Macron were seen exchanging physical gestures, which have long characterised their public relationship. The two men have a history of extended handshakes. While this is often viewed as a symbol of their diplomatic rapport, their interactions are also a mixture of camaraderie and control.

The handshake between Trump and Macron on Monday was no exception. Macron, known for his strong handshakes, has often used physical gestures to subtly assert his position in conversations with Trump. Their history of handshakes dates back to their first meeting in 2017, where they engaged in a symbolic battle of grips. That moment, often recalled, set the tone for their relationship, blending power dynamics with public displays of affection.
Despite ongoing health speculation, Trump has not released a full medical report since 2024, although his personal physician did issue a statement in November 2023 declaring his health to be in “excellent” condition.
