Recounting the conversation, Thiel warned Musk that if he donates his wealth, he could end up funding causes championed by rival Bill Gates. According to Thiel, the Tesla CEO took the concerns “seriously”. He responded asking “What am I supposed to do—give it to my children?,” in Thiel’s telling. “You know, it would be much worse to give it to Bill Gates,” Theil told Musk.Musk, who currently holds an estimated $486 billion fortune, signed the Giving Pledge in 2012.
