In 2016, Jeff Bezos hit out at Donald Trump saying that ‘a confident leader would embrace scrutiny’.
“What I’ve seen so far is he is calmer than he was the first time — more confident, more settled,” Jeff Bezos said at the summit. Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post, previously clashed with Trump on several occasions over the newspaper’s coverage.
Bezos hints at shift in dynamic with Trump
Interestingly, in 2016, Bezos had hit out at Trump saying that ‘a confident leader would embrace scrutiny’. He had locked horns with the US President after Trump, in an unprecedented move, banned about a dozen news organisations, including the Post, from access to news conferences and campaign events
However, in his recent statements at the New York Times Deal Book Summit, Jeff Bezos has acknowledged the US administration’s efforts to engage with industry leaders and foster dialogue on key economic and technological issues as evidence of this ‘change’ in Trump’s second term. He also indicated readiness to put past conflicts behind and prioritise common objectives, suggesting a possible shift in the dynamic between the White House and Silicon Valley.
“I’m very hopeful — he seems to have a lot of energy around reducing regulation. And my point of view is, if I can help him do that, I’m going to help him, because we do have too much regulation in this country,” the Amazon Founder said.
