What? Apple Launches Fully Functional App Store Website

Apple has unveiled a comprehensive redesign of its App Store web interface, transforming what was previously a collection of static app landing pages into a fully functional storefront accessible through any web browser.

The launch, which went live on November 2, 2025, marks Apple’s most significant expansion of its app ecosystem beyond its own hardware in years.

The new web-based App Store at apps.apple.com now mirrors the complete functionality of Apple’s native App Store applications, featuring the familiar “Today” tab with curated recommendations, editorial content, and special events. Users can seamlessly switch between different Apple platforms using a dropdown menu in the upper-left corner, browsing apps designed for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Vision Pro.

Enhanced Discovery and Cross-Platform Access

The redesigned interface addresses a long-standing limitation that prevented comprehensive app discovery outside Apple’s ecosystem. Previously, the apps.apple.com domain simply redirected users to a generic information page about the App Store. The new platform includes robust search functionality, category browsing, and media-rich app product pages featuring screenshots, video trailers, descriptions, and user reviews.

“This update meaningfully reduces the friction for discovery,” according to industry analysis. The move particularly benefits developers, press, educators, and enterprise IT teams who operate outside the Apple ecosystem but need to research and compare applications before making purchasing decisions.

Apple Arcade is fully integrated into the web experience, allowing users to explore the gaming subscription service’s catalog across all platforms. The service costs $6.99 monthly and offers a three-month free trial for new Apple device purchasers.

Strategic Response to Competitive and Regulatory Pressures

The timing of Apple’s web expansion appears calculated to address mounting antitrust pressure, particularly from European regulators who have already forced Apple to allow alternative app stores in EU markets. By democratizing app discovery through web access, Apple can potentially deflect criticism about monopolistic practices while maintaining control over its core App Store experience.

The launch also eliminates a key competitive advantage held by Google Play Store, which has offered web accessibility for years. However, unlike Google’s platform, Apple’s web interface does not allow direct app downloads or remote installation on devices. Users must still utilize native App Store applications on their devices to complete purchases and installations.

Despite this limitation, the web platform creates new user acquisition pathways for developers and allows potential customers to explore Apple’s app ecosystem before making hardware purchasing decisions. With Apple’s App Store generating significant revenue as part of the company’s $81 billion services division, expanded visibility through web access aligns with the company’s broader growth strategy.
